Antiwar artist Craig Foster uses his copyright free graphics to stimulate free thought

July 4th, 2007 · Written by · No Comments

After graduating from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Craig Foster got a job with Pixar Animation Studios in California. Up to that point he was purely a pen and ink artist and an utter refusnik when it came to working digitally – that is, until he was threatened.

“One day when I was working as a cell animator my boss informed me that I had to start using a computer and I had to use it now,” explains the artist. “So I got set up with a Mac, a Wacom, Photoshop, and Illustrator, and I’ve been working digitally every since.”

When the Iraq war began, Foster refused to let it get him down.

When the Iraq war began, Foster refused to let it get him down. He channeled his frustration into generating thousands of anti-war graphics. His free posters have been circulated internationally and have been included in various showings of anti-war artwork – they are soon to be featured in the worldwide “Propaganda III Tour.”

These extremely graphical tableaus attempt to convey Foster’s feelings about recent headlines without the use of text, while at the same time adding humor to darkness.

“My hope is to appeal to even those observers who might disagree with the point of view and be inclined to dismiss the work at first glance,” says Foster. “More importantly, the work is an indictment of the ready acceptance of war and the notion that military intervention is an effective means of protecting America and the rest of the world.”
