Soulless

A life lived on the bleeding edge
Fragmented phantasms of failed attempts
At breaking out
At playing the escape artist

Digging with sophomoric spoons
Snapping apart and slicing into my fleshy palms
Hands that have built much
Now subverted in the name of quarterly earnings
Of voodoo marketing men

And it is men
Manipulative and nefarious
Who have formulated this furious rush to the top
Taking me along for the wild ride
Sans ethics or soul
Harvesting my intellect for their own personal gain

Here, dancing with Moore’s law
Riding the wave of burgeoning technology
This latest and greatest fad of a frontier
We tout total information awareness
Unfettered human expression
Rapidly accelerating connectivity

All this potential
And yet
According to the slippery slide
Proudly projected onto the ivory wall
The best we can muster
Is imagining innovative ways to hawk consumer goods

Caught up in the death throws
Of ravenous capitalism
While we wait expectantly
For golden breadcrumbs to fall from the lips
Of entrenched billionaires
